1969 BMW 1600

This beautiful Chamonix white BMW 1600 has been sold.  It was in my collection for over three years, and the previous Nevada owner had it in the family for decades. Throughout that time it remained in essentially stock condition as well as being an absolute joy to drive.

Exterior

It is rare to find a nice rust free example of an early 1600, and rarer still to know that this example has spent the majority of its existence in the rust free Nevada basin.

The strut and shock towers are perfect, as are the rocker panels, and even the trunk has escaped the typical rust through found under the spare tire holder. The chrome bumpers still shine brightly, and the front grills have been updated with the black slats (non-typical to the 1600) the previous owner.

The 1969 models are free of the U.S spec reflectors found on later models, and early models include additional rare features such as the flush euro turn signals, early trapezoid style side mirror, and red taillight centers, all of which are optioned on this model.

Many of the seals were replaced during a recent glass-out re-spray (done in the original Chamonix white color), including the front and rear windshield seals, the trunk seal, and the under hood seals. Additionally, all the belt line molding hardware and rocker clips were replaced, along with several other items including a new antenna, new license plate lights, and a new engine label set.

The windshield has some scaring from the wipers, and though I feel this is a beautiful car overall, it is a driver and therefore not without its small collection of 35 year old flaws.

Interior

The interior is in very nice condition. A new Black 15 piece carpet kit has been installed with new pedal pad and a new rear parcel tray.

The door panels remain free of any speaker holes or mounting screw holes, and the headliner and visors are also free from any rips or tears.

All of the seat belts are intact and fully functional, and all of the knobs and controls are all in excellent working order, including the flashing red hazard switch, and the two speed wipers. The silver dollar style gauges all work great, though the clock has recently stopped.

There is one small slit in the rear seat, a chip out of the ash tray handle, and of course the dash has several small cracks typical to our desert life.

Mechanical

The car starts instantly, and drives wonderfully. The suspension feels tight, the brakes stop straight, and the car steers effortlessly. The parking brake works and the brake system has been completely flushed.

The engine does not smoke (not on acceleration, deceleration, or at idle) and it has not suffered any modifications. It still runs on the original Solex single barrel carburetor with a manual choke, and even the cold weather air box is still intact.

It has incredible power for a one barrel, and it remains easy to power through all the gears (no grinding synchros here!).

The engine has just been tuned and serviced with all new Bosch parts including plugs, points, rotor, cap and wires. The fuel lines and filter have been replaced, and the radiator was replaced for summer, so it continues to run cool even in the heat of the Vegas desert.

Additionally, the battery and the cables were all replaced and a set of four brand new tires have been installed to ensure more trouble free driving.

Upcoming maintenance should include replacing the rear CV axel boots and the center support bearing (guibo’s all look good).

Come To Vegas!
